** Josh Laney Page ** -This is a record of Josh's work on the princess Leia project **Wednesday Oct 31 2018:** DAMMANN GRATINGS Found two websites that sell 1D Dammann gratings, better known as Multi-Spot DOE's. https://www.holoor.co.il/quote/order-received/3673/?key=wc_order_5bda287204044 Israel, so I assume long shipping time. Multiple wavelength options. https://www.lasercomponents.com/us/product/diffractive-elements-for-beam-splitting/ New Hampshire, better shipping, unsure as to specific options. MICROSPHERES = NEW PARTICLE Here is a link to 3M and their products. You can request samples through an agent, I suggest Rodrigo Zuniga who I have worked through: rzuniga@ethorn.com Hers is 3M's brochure {{ :2017_new_glass_bubbles_overview_through_s28hs.pdf |}} you can then coat them in carbon by working through Mike Dorias in the geology department. rate is $10 a coating. dorais@byu.edu The above findings are some current options for gratings as well as for a new particle. **Friday Sept 21 2018:** https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S002240731830044X great paper to refer to on everything trapping 1 particle, go to the first table and look at photophoretic traps Notes on types of Particles to trap - Carbon nanocluster (can we characterize this) is presented as an option - Carbon coated glass sphere (few microns) -- see single vortex beam under photophoretic in list - looks like Schvedov has done this! https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/156626629.pdf - Schvedov's giant particle trap outlines this glass sphere method pretty well https://journals.aps.org/prl/pdf/10.1103/PhysRevLett.105.118103 **Friday July 13 2018:** Today I took a few pictures to display three trapped particles and two trapped particles for Dr Smalley's grant proposal. I am currently able to trap 2 particles for a few seconds easily, and my best is two for a duration of about a minute. 3 is only ever possible for 1-2 seconds so far I've been able to find with the current grating, trap, alignment etc. I should look into these factors to maximize and improve my setup. Here are some things I'm noticing but need to confirm with the trap: - cleanliness / correctness of the grating will affect the trap quality (moving to differing parts of the grating showed differing abnormal patterns at a large distance from the focal point, displaying there must be either grime, or the grating is imperfect. It would be good to take a look at this under the microscope and look at a certain area, or just make a better grating/ gratings.
