Research Log: Justin Christensen

Over the past few weeks, I've had two focuses: 1) Getting more modulators in cartridges, and 2) Creating the RGB test sample. As for the cartridges, we haven't been able to get a very bright beam from the laser through the modulator, so we have decided to use lenses with longer focal lengths and elongate the cartridge to be able to handle those longer focal lengths. Also, Scott and I made some changes to make the cartridge sturdier and we have gotten incredible results from the Form 2 3D Printer. Next week, we can hopefully get one or two cartridges completed. With the RGB test sample, I am still in the process of fabrication, but it won't take much longer, then we can test to see if our hypothesis was correct. If so, we can get on to making green and blue light-coupling modulators!

I have officially started working on RGB modulators. Scott helped a whole lot today to walk me through the different parameters that would need to be changed from our current devices that work for red so that they could properly couple green and blue laser light. We were able to find some data that Kamran had supplied for the waveguides and the transducers, then ran some code through MatLab to figure out the gratings. After determining new parameters, we made a DXF file for an RGB Test Sample that I will begin fabricating tomorrow.

With Winter Semester coming to a close, I'm now ready to really get to work over the summer doing IMMERSE, and therefore, I want to keep better records of the research I've done and will be doing. The past two semesters have consisted of me learning how to use all of the different machines in the lab and in the cleanroom, learning about all of our different projects and how they're interlaced, as well as creating my own batch of devices and installing them into cartridges for the monitor. I look forward to continuing to learn as much as I can in the lab, and to make a lot of progress with our research, and overall become a better engineer!
