Summer 2016 goals - Erich

Overall goal:

Publish paper on volumetric particle-trapping display

Necessary items:

  • High-quality images:
    • Color-correct raster
      • color/sharpness demo - copyright-free images (macro) Jul-1
      • R2-D2 + Leia (blue+color) (macro - just Leia, far camera - all) Jul-1,Jul-2
      • Ash pokeball (macro or far camera?) Jul-2
      • Iron man screen? (macro or far camera?) Jul-2
      • Iron man gauntlet? (far camera) Jul-2
      • Earth in hand (macro - just earth, far camera - all) Jul-1,Jul-2
    • Persistent image demo (large vector, small raster)
      • Vector: Qui-Gon Jinn with ship over hand (far camera, large) Jul-2,Jul-3
      • Vector: Butterfly (+hand) (far camera) Jul-2,Jul-3
      • Raster: Jul-1,Jul-3
    • 3D vector
      • ? butterfly (macro or far) Aug-1
      • Qui-Gon hand/ship (far) Aug-1
      • wireframe from modeling software Aug-1
    • Video vector (3D?)
      • butterfly flying ? Jul-3 ?
      • wireframe rotating Jul-3 ?
    • Scale demo
      • largest - butterfly + hand (far camera) Jul-2
      • smallest - microscope annotation thing ?
    • Plasma for comparison - 3D or 2D vector Aug-4
  • Collect data for: Aug-3
    • movement speed
    • minimum power to trap
    • size of particles picked up (by trap type/laser power)
    • hold time (?)
  • ? Be able to identify what creates a good trap reproducibly

Goals by week

June

  • Weeks 2-3:
    • color-correct rasters
      • new green laser / faster modulation
      • Labview color correction
      • find good drawing area
      • find non-copyrighted demo images
  • Week 4: (out of town)

Results: Raster images are much clearer using macro and smaller drawing size. I spent time getting rid of zigzag on images instead of color correction. Color correction is probably the last remaining thing before rasters look good enough for the paper.

July

  • Week 1 (Raster):
    • Color correction calibration program
    • Images: color demo (BBB, dejarik), Leia closeup, Earth closeup
    • Try small POV raster
  • Week 2 (Object images / Vector):
    • Vector path generation program (7/26)
    • Small vector images
    • Large vector images with objects
    • Try POV vector
    • More raster images, now with objects (far camera position)
  • Week 3 (Persistent images):
    • Improve hold for POV
    • ? Measure max speed
    • Persistent vector image
    • Persistent raster image
  • Week 4 (3D):
    • Trap with variable focus lens

August

  • Week 1 (3D):
    • software to generate wireframe vector from CAD format
    • 3D images and video
  • Week 2: (out of town)
  • Week 3:
    • collect data
  • Week 4:
    • Plasma image
    • write paper
