Projects

LINEAR DIAMONICLE
  • This is a precursor to the circular Diamonicle to act as a proof of concept. A flashing LED will be scanned using a line of long transducers off of the surface of the Lithium Niobate.
CIRCULAR DIAMONICLE:
  • Create for Daqri a working prototype of the Diamonicle. The first design will have all transducers driven with the same signal. After that we will try independently driven transducers.
STATIC DIAMONICLE
  • We have to have something for Daqri before Dec. This is a demonstration device that shows a static hologram, written on the Heidelberg, on a Diamonicle with transducers that have no signal. They can show it off and see how much they want the final product.
HOLODECK BACKBONE
  • Provide the characterization and understanding needed for the light guided Holodeck Panels.
  • Create a standard testing procedure for these devices.

Testing Guidelines

Test every modulator made. Every device should have the following put onto the wiki:

  • A detailed description of the fabrication process.
  • An optical Image of Every Transducer.
  • A detailed description of tests run so that they can be reproduced.
  • Power and angle measurements for the deflected light.
  • System Analyzer Smith Charts, SWR Charts, videos of modalities, and any other data recorded for each Transducer should be placed in the “groups folder” so that it is available.

Skills

Every Group Member should strive to be able to create and characterize Long Transducer style modulators from a slab of X-Cut Lithium Niobate. As such each should strive to become proficient at the following:

  • Laser safety
  • Aluminum Deposition in the E-Beam Evaporator
  • Pattern writing in the Heidelberg
  • Using etchants and acids
  • Using the Diesaw
  • Wirebonding and packaging a device
  • Using the Network Analyzer for Impedance matching the breakout board
  • Be able to effectively Prism Couple

Also strive for a theoretical understanding of the modulators produced. Please read through all documents found on the “Near Eye Display” page of this wiki.
