Research Summary: This summer I will be working with Dylan Barton and Dan Kurtz on the circular Buffer project for the Holographic Video monitor group under doctor Smalley. The general idea for this project is that currently our holo-chip devices used in the holographic video monitors produce a signal that we write to a computer through a standard graphics card. Because of the nature of writing to a graphics card we are only able to write one signal at a time per cable that we are connected to. This greatly limits us in the extent to which we can use the holo-chips since our end plan is to have over a hundred channels and each channel would need its own cable. However, if we could take the signal that one holochip produces, re-amplify it (since it would have lost power), send it through a mux and then reuse the old signal in a continuous loop, we could free up our computer to write the signals coming from the various other holo-chips that we would need in our holo-monitor design.

To accomplish this each of the members on our 3-person team will complete introductory projects which will help each of us to gain a fundamental understanding of different parts of that go into the holographic monitor. I will be working on helping to assemble a working mark V holomonitor with the aid of Parker Awerkamp and Nate Constantino. This will involve soldering the different components that go into a holo-monitor, testing and then assembling the mark V monitor. While I am working on this project, Dylan will be working in the lab to gain a basic understanding of the near-eye system that we use and Dan will be fabricating a working holo-chip device. After this we should have the skills necessary to create the circular buffer that was briefly described in the first paragraph.
