Controlled Lab Spaces

MicroFab Table

This seeks to protect the other members in the office by containing the laser light produced in this area.

The UV laser used for photo-lithography is encased in the red welding screen that can block all reflected or spread light. The direct beam will burn through the red film if left over a period of time. Whenever the laser is in use the black curtains should be drawn closed and the red film in place whenever the laser is in use.

The grey curtain and black foam-board is in place to contain the IR ufab laser. Whenever this laser is running the grey curtain should be closed and the foam-core in place. When this laser is running a large amount of IR laser light is scattered off of the writing surface.

Each of these lasers are wavelengths that are not perceptible to the human eye. the IR scope can give the location of the IR laser. The UV laser can be revealed through florescence in a standard sheet of white paper. Just because you cannot see the beam does not mean you are not getting significant light into your eyes.

The user of these lasers should always use laser goggles rated to at least 4dB attenuation in these areas.

The tube supplying air pressure to this table comes from a valve in the ECEn Shop - CB 420:

Safety Procedures

MicroFab Aparatus

This is in CB 496 in the back-left corner of the room.

This uses a femto-second class 4 infrared (1040 nm) laser capable of 5 Watts. When focused, it has the power to ionize the air creating plasma and to vaporize solid materials.

Laser Cooling Unit XYZ Stage & Shutter Controllers

Startup Procedure:

A. Turn on the Cooling unit.

  1. Turn on the power to the cooling unit located on the back of the black wheeled box.
  2. Turn on the thermostat and temperature control on the front of the black wheeled box.
  3. Turn the key to “enable” and wait for the light to stop flashing (about 5 minutes).

B. Meanwhile turn on the translation stage motor control unit.

  1. Wait to hear the “Happy” sound.

C. Turn on the shutter control box.
D. Start the μFab control software.

  1. Open the program.
  2. Run without searching for new connections.

E. Start the Laser control software after 5 minutes have elapsed and the off light on the cooling unit has stopped flashing.

  1. Open the program.
  2. Connect to the laser.
  3. Turn the laser to “Standby” and wait for the light to stop flashing.
  4. Turn the laser to “On” and wait for the light to stop flashing.
  5. Turn up the power to desired level.
  6. Open the Shutter.

Shutdown Procedure:

A. Quit the Laser control software.

  1. Close the Shutter.
  2. Turn down the power to zero.
  3. Turn the laser to “Standby” position and wait for the light to stop flashing.
  4. Turn the laser to “Off” position and wait for the light to stop flashing.
  5. Close the program.

B. Quit the μFab control software.
C. Turn off the shutter control box.
D. Turn off the translation stage motor control unit.
E. Turn off the Cooling unit.

  1. Turn the key to “disable” position.
  2. Turn off the thermostat and temperature control on the front of the black wheeled box.
  3. Turn off the power to the cooling unit located on the back of the black wheeled box.

Ultraviolet Laser

This is in CB 496 in the back-left corner of the room.

This is a class 3B ultraviolet (325 nm) laser that outputs 200 mW. Its control panel is located on the floor under the optics table.

Laser Control Panel

Startup Procedure:

To turn on this laser simple turn the key to the “On” position and wait 10 minutes for the laser to warm up.

Shutdown Procedure:

To turn off this laser simple turn the key to the “Off” position. Under normal circumstances this laser should have at least 15 minutes of run time before being turned off.

Near-Eye / Monitor Display Lasers

This is in CB 496 in the middle and back-right corner of the room.

These are class :?: visible-spectrum lasers capable of :?: Watts.

Ovens

There are two high-temperature (range :?:) ovens in the south-east corner of CB 495, to the left of the sink.

These are often used to heat solids / liquids to very high (how much :?:) temperatures.

Prongs, oven mitts, face mask, and lab apron should be used when working with hot liquids.
