18 Channel Modulator Team

Projects

IRONEAGLE
  • Create a Aluminum masked based process for writing single samples on the Heidelberg that uses only one deposition of 200nm Al.
SUPPLYCHAIN
  • Support the monitor group as they need making sure they always have the devices they need.
GRATINGS
  • Create a ESEM driven process that allows us to etch gratings into each device. These have the potential to remove the need for a coupling prism and drop the cost of the modulator to 4% of the current cost.
ACIDBENCH
  • Experimentally determine the most efficient form of Proton Exchange from Regular to Dilute PE and Reverse PE.
SIMULATE
  • Create a series of simulations that predict the function of a device based on the experimental parameters. We will then be able to “test” devices without even fabricating them.

Testing Guidelines

Test every modulator made. Every device should have the following put onto the wiki:

  • Detailed description of the fabrication process.
  • Optical Image of Every Transducer.
  • At least one video of each color using one transducer.
  • At least one full characterization for red, green, and blue with graphs placed on the wiki. Include modulator ID, transducer number, and laser color.
  • System Analyzer Smith Charts, SWR Charts, and any other data recorded for each Transducer should be placed in the “groups folder” so that it is available.

Skills

Every Group Member should strive to be able to create and characterize an 18 Channel Modulator from a slab of X-Cut Lithium Niobate. As such each should strive to become proficient at the following:

  • Laser safety
  • Aluminum Deposition in the E-Beam Evaporator
  • Aluminum Deposition in the Thermal Evaporator
  • Silicon Nitride deposition in PECVD1 (if continued)
  • SiO2 deposition in PECVD2
  • Pattern writing in the Heidelberg
  • Using etchants and acids
  • Waveguide creation through Proton Exchange and Annealing
  • Using the Diesaw
  • Using the Polisher
  • Waveguide measurement in the Metricon
  • Wirebonding and packaging a device
  • Using the Network Analyzer for Impedance matching the breakout board
  • Be able to effectively Prism Couple
  • Characterization of devices using the Characterization Apparatus

Also strive for a theoretical understanding of the modulators produced. Please read through everything about leaky mode modulators on our wiki's “Publications” page.

Future Paper Ideas

  • Linearity of leaky mode interaction
  • Diffraction efficiency comparison between, PE, APE, ADPE, RPE
  • Diffraction efficiency change for y device
